2012년 8월 21일 이야기 디피링 마을에 도착한 첫 날의 일이다. 마을이 얼마나 크고 넓은지, 내 집은 정확히 어디에 위치해 있는지 분간도 어려울 때, 갑작스런 마을대표의 부름으로 아침도 거르고 산을 올랐다. 당시 마을대표 자택이 있는 언덕 위 마을까지도 걸어가는 데 숨이 찼다. 그를 만난 후, 이웃 마을의 프로젝트를 보고 올 것을 지시 받았다. 나와 동행해 준 이웃 마을 아주머니는 영어로 의사소통이 전혀 불가능했다. 향하고 있는 마을이 도대체 어디인지 궁금했지만 묵묵히 따라가는 수 밖에. 그렇게 길을 걸어 걸어 언덕을 넘고 약 1시간 남짓을 걸었더랬다. 뜨거운 태양과 끝을 알 수 없는 여정에 목마름과 배고픔이 더해갔다.
